Vimeo, DailyMotion, Pastebin, Xmarks & Major Torrent Sites Blocked in India Copyright Labs, Complaint
Most of the major ISPs in India have blocked many websites including Vimeo.com, DailyMotion.com, Pastebin.com, Xmarks.com and all major torrent sites. I made some calls to few ISPs and found out that a Chennai based company Copyright Labs has apparently convinced Madras High Court to issue a John Doe order.
I checked it on Airtel and MTNL. I am getting this error:
Access to this site has been blocked as per Court Orders
Copyright Labs filed a civil lawsuit to prevent copyright infringement of the upcoming movies of their clients. Mind you, the movie has not been pirated yet. In fact, it is an upcoming movie which has not even been released yet.
This sounds really absurd, I am surprised that the court has issued an order to block those websites even without an actual infringement. I have never seen Vimeo.com or Xmarks.com pirating anything.
It might as well be possible to get a court order to block the whole Internet, all satellite communications and sales of all media (DVDs, CDs & USB drives) to prevent piracy of a movie that I may produce in few decades. Yet, we call India the largest democracy.
Workaround: You can get around the ban for some of the websites by using using https:// in the URL.

Does it work with a proxy server? Maybe Squid? Or if you don't have an outside server, TOR/Spotflux? I'm not in India, so....

This just proves our government is stupid. I understand torrents but what is up with DailyMotion and Vimeo?

If I want to share Ubuntu-desktop_12.04_LTS.iso, do you think that must be censored? and if you want to censore just a part of torrent sites, you will need to use DPI (deepPacketInspection) that is all expect rescpectfull to the net neutrality and to your own right to your private data. switched to Google's public DNS and all these sites are working fine for me. (by the way I'm from Chennai)

Dailymotion IP is: 195.8.215.137...it's blocked. DNS does nothing but just resolves DailyMotion->195.8.215.137.
