If you have been getting this message while visiting any website, it means your ISP has blocked the website.
"This website/URL has been blocked until further notice either pursuant to Court orders or on the Directions issued by the Department of Telecommunications"
This ban is a threat to Indian democracy, Internet and our freedom. I will tell you why this has happened and how you can unblock it.
Why did Government block these websites?
Remember the song ‘Kolaveri Di’? It got viral on YouTube and became popular over the internet.
The ‘Kolaveri Di’ song belongs to a Tamil movie ‘3’. Shockingly, the producers of the movie ‘3’ and song ‘Kolaveri Di’ are behind this Internet censorship in India. They are damaging the same Internet, which brought all the popularity and hype to their song and movie.
Moreover, the Government never ordered to block any of these websites. The producers of the movie 3 procured a John Doe order against several ISPs in India to stop the piracy of their movie. The court issued an order instructing ISPs to not to pirate their website. But, the court never asked them to censor any website; the court order does not say anything about any website.
The producers of ‘3’ along with another scam company Copyright Labs, tricked the ISPs into blocking half of the internet. The producers of movie gave ISPs a biased list of websites to block. Most of those websites like Vimeo.com, XMarks.com and Pastebin.com have nothing to do with piracy.
I recommend you to boycott the ‘3’ movie, ‘Kolaveri Di’ song and any upcoming songs and movies from these producers. If you see any of their videos floating on YouTube or Facebook, dislike it.
How can I access the blocked websites?
The easiest way to get around this block would be to prefix the website URL with https://. Try accessing https://www.xmarks.com instead of http://www.xmarks.com, it should work for most websites.
Google Public DNS
If it does not work for your favourite website, try changing your DNS servers. Change your DNS servers to Google’s public DNS (126.96.36.199 and 188.8.131.52) in your network settings. You can complete instructions on Google’s website https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using
Install Tor Bundle
Installing Tor should enable access to all the blocked websites; it will also safeguard you against any similar upcoming Internet blocks in future. You can download and install Tor from https://www.torproject.org/download/download-easy.html.en
Let me know if any these methods work for you, or if you are still having any problems.
I encourage you to spread this on Facebook & Twitter. Support any initiatives / activities to remove the block and retain our freedom of expression.
What do you feel about this whole Internet censorship in India? Would you let them take away with your freedom so easily?
